I realized that even here in Canada, there is no job security. In June 2014, during the economic downturn in the oil and gas industry, there was a mass lay-off in our company, and I was one of them. I heard from my AGA now that there is an opportunity to create my own business, to dictate my paycheck, with no boss and no lay-off.

I studied LLQP, passed the exam, and got licensed after six months. Not yet decided on doing the business full-time, I got another job as a chemical technologist at Nanalysis for more than a year. It resulted in not having any Greatway clients that year.

In 2016, I left the job to care for my ailing mother. To maximize time while caring for my mother, I decided to study for Registered Retirement Consultant online and passed the exam at the end of 2016. I had a few clients while being an apprentice.

I became a Certified Field Trainer in May 2018, which allowed me to set my appointments in my free time and build momentum. In May 2020, I got promoted to Managing Broker.

I had many challenges doing the business. Frequent travel to the US for my parents, visiting my children in the Philippines and Australia, coping with the zoom during the pandemic and learning how to use different software. The key is being flexible and adaptable to succeed in this business.

I have to motivate myself by reading books, having mentors, attending meetings and connecting to more people, doing policy reviews and asking for client recommendations. I also realize that knowledge alone has no power without action.

It was a long journey, but I never gave up. I am still working towards the next level of my promotion. I realized that being a builder means having a team who will give you further motivation to improve more skills of being a good leader.
