My son is my hero because he rose to face all the challenges after that fateful day.

I feel I now have to help others prepare for something so unexpected that it dumps your life upside-down. It’s now my mission to help others prepare for life-altering events that no one ever thinks will happen to them.

 

Life changes in the blink of an eye, always when you least expect it!

In 2012, my then 19-yr old son went to work on Boxing Day. He was a railway maintenance person. He had worked the entire Christmas vacation so that his peers with children could have some valued family time.

At 10:30 am, my home phone rang. It was the RCMP. They advised me that my son had been hit by a train while clearing the snow off the track switches.

Our whole lives changed within 22 seconds of him starting work that day. By the time I reached the hospital, the trauma team had sedated him, and I could not speak to him. However, I carefully reached over his nearly lifeless body and whispered into his ear not to die on me. He was so banged up and had so many injuries I could barely recognize him.

Amongst the many other injuries, my son had to have his right leg amputated that day. If that wasn't bad enough, 6-months later, he had to have his left leg amputated because it wasn't healing, and he would never be able to walk without support.

He spent so many months in the hospital, and I lost my job because I didn't want to go to work the day following the accident. After all, he was still in surgery. My boss didn't care that we had had this tragedy, so I had to quit my job to spend that time with my son.

Since that day, we have grown closer as a family, and my son's scars have healed, but it was a long road during recovery. My son is my hero because he rose to face all the challenges after that fateful day.

As his mom, I feel I now have to help others prepare for something so unexpected that it dumps your life upside-down. It’s now my mission to help others prepare for life-altering events that no one ever thinks will happen to them. I believe that in doing so, I might help other families not have to deal with the stress of not having enough money to financially be able to handle the expense that comes with such a horrific event.
